The Second International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities

Feminization of the Masculine: (Re)thinking the Basis of our Civilization in the Scope of Work, Culture and Social Organizations.

Prof. Sumaya Machado Lima.

This paper arguments that, in parallel to the perpetuation of some patriarchal symbolic values, coexist a process of cultural _ and moral_ transformation, which can be verified in areas that are apparently not tangible, such as work and leisure. For this reason, this process will be referred in the modern sphere of the administrative vision of the leadership corporations, as well as in themes of the hollywood´s cinematography productions, where both the elements of the so called “masculine identity crisis” and of the recovered feminine aspects will be pointed. In order to illustrate and finish this subject, some parts of an interview will be presented with Brazilian men, who are between 20 and 40 years old, middle class, who argue both men's cultural representation and role in todays' society. This process, which decentralizes traditional values, will be discussed throughout a neo-feminist focus. This perspective can be understood by Silviano Santiago's affirmation, an important Brazilian literary critic: “One of the prime pos-modern activities is to try to comprehend, through what Jacques Derrida calls deconstruction reading, the relative questions that were marginalized in order to many others occidental systems of thinking, universalized, could exist in its plenitude. Those universalized systems of historical reason, acting at the four corners of the occidental and lettered world, are being contested in its basis, by the screen of the deconstruction”. This paper fundaments itself under the theory of Derrida, Deleuze, P. Bordieu, Habbemas, Giddens, Peter Burke, and under Brasilian theorists as Santiago, Miriam Goldenberg, Moema Toscano, Guacira Lopes, Luiz Cushnir.
