Experiencing Nature: An Interdisciplinary Approach
Assoc Prof Deborah Mitchell.
Our experiences of nature are often aesthetic and highly personal. From the beginning of history many people have engaged in expressing this experience in both literature and art through the lens of their respective cultures. Many university courses separate the experience into distinct courses neatly labeled, "English", "Humanities", or "Art." In addition, many universities who do not have a Liberal Arts focus often give the students an overview of a subject as opposed to asking them to become engaged. This paper will share an interdisciplinary approach to experiencing nature, a course in which students explore the natural world through both the written word and visual images.
